Fashionable Clothes: Not Just For Models

Friday, November 29, 2013

Do you sometimes feel that high fashion is way out of your reach? I’m not just referring to money. What I mean is, the fashion industry seems to design for only one set-in-stone body type: tall and thin! Who in the world matches that description? Well, models do, but what about the rest of us? Everyone has a right to feel beautiful and stylish. Fortunately, style and elegance is within the grasp of people of all shapes and sizes, now more than ever. And fashion designers are becoming more responsive to the purchasing clout of women of different body types, big, petite, tall, short, and everything in between. You don’t needIt’s not necessary to get plastic surgery or spend every waking hour at the gym to find clothes that flatter.
The first thing to understand is that the top level of the fashion industry, the designers who make couture collections featured at prestigious shows in Paris and New York, is not really about regular, everyday people. The high-end designers, the ones whose clothes you read about in fashion magazines or see on fashion TV shows, do set the trends every season. Their clothes are made to fit professional models, and are geared toward making an impact on the runway. It’s similar to designing costumes for a theatrical performance. Eventually the major “looks” make it to shops through the designers’ ready-to-wear lines. As well, the prevailing trends get incorporated into the clothing designed more for the general public, such as that sold at trendy stores like H&M.
If you want to dress currently, by all means study fashion magazines and websites, but look at these as a blueprint for what you want to look for in stores that cater to your body type. Think of it as research, so you know what colours, cuts and styles are popular this season.
Most models, obviously, are tall and thin. Most women are not. You may be shorter than average, also known as petite. You may have an athletic build, which is notoriously difficult to find proper-fitting clothes for. Or you may have a bigger body type, known in the industry as plus-sized. But don’t despair, there are clothing lines and stores that specifically cater to these and other shapes and sizes, and they make clothes that are designed to be not only comfortable, but current!
A well-known complaint for years has been that the fashion industry has created unrealistic and unattainable standards of beauty that do not reflect the needs of ordinary women. Because of this, the industry has made strong efforts to more accurately represent the diversity of their customers, and provide quality cutting-edge clothing for all shapes and sizes. Bigger women often felt that clothing made for them was designed merely for comfort, not beauty. That is definitely true no longer.
If you want to get a snapshot of what's current this season, you can go to the mall and browse the collections of the more expensive designer shops. Once you have a sense of what's "in," pop over to a store that caters to your body type and see what they have to offer. Or, these days, you can really get an idea of the choices out there by searching the internet, where every clothing line is literally at your fingertips.
The bottom line is, don't feel left out because you don't fit the conventional mold of what the industry dictates. High style and elegance are truly within your reach, if you know where to look!
