Beyond Western Apparel: Cowboy Boots in Modern Fashion

Friday, November 29, 2013

If you're still wondering whether there is a place for cowboy boots in modern fashion, then you can settle that debate with yourself right now, because, yes - cowboy boots and other aspects of western wear are definitely still 'in', and there are a ton of ways you can wear them. And no, you don't have to be going to a Dukes of Hazzard audition, a rodeo, or one of those Coyote Ugly places to get away with it either. You can rock cowboy boots - and other types of western apparel if you so desire - to the post office, the grocery store, and just about anywhere else you tend to frequent, with a few exceptions.
While cowboy boots are timeless and versatile, there are certain ways of wearing them that just aren't appropriate in the modern world:
-Cowboy boots with tight, tapered jeans and a western-style shirt. Unless you are going to a costume party or, for some reason, you want to look like Howdy-Doody that day, stay away from this look. Skinny jeans are designed with a slightly tapered leg to fit inside boots, and that's fine. Just try to pair them with a looser, more modern shirt--not a plaid button down with pearl-snap buttons.
-Cowboy boots with work clothes. It's probably wise to save the boots for your off-duty hours, unless you are a ranch-hand.
-Cowboy boots with tuxedos. Some men think weddings are the perfect opportunity to pull out the old cowboy boots - usually in earnest hopes that there will be line dancing at the reception. Please spare us all! Ladies, if he doesn't know any better, then it's your job to not let him go there. (Suits, in some circumstances, are another story.)
-Cowboy boots with gym clothes. Did I even have to tell you this? That means no yoga paints, leggings or grey cotton shorts with the waistband turned down.
By following the above guidelines, you should have no problem pulling off cowboy boots in today's world. You still have plenty of license to get creative with them and start new trends of your own! Wear them with jeans, dresses, and leggings and other forms of legwear. You don't necessarily have to be savvy to understand general norms of dress and what looks good. If you have the urge to wear cowboy boots, heck, if you have the urge to incorporate any aspect of western wear into your wardrobe, and think you can sport it with confidence, then by all means do it!
