Growing Up in Western Apparel

Friday, November 29, 2013

It would probably be safe to say that most American men of a certain age grew up watching with rapt interest their cowboy heroes as they roped cattle, battled for freedom and security, rescued women and fought off the bad guys. Of course, the western apparel, from the cowboy boots to the cowboy hats atop their head became the symbols of what it was to be a man- a free man- who had many opportunities for exploration and adventure. This stereotype was only reproduced in the rest of their lives, from movie stars donning western wear to the Marlboro Man, meant to portray the very essence of masculinity.
So, when you think about it, there are entire generations of men walking around who learned to associate cowboy boots and western apparel with what it meant to be a man. Is it any wonder that western apparel has made it off the ranch into big cities and even hit the major fashion runways? Clearly, as a culture, this is an important part of self expression. Now, there are plenty of western wear enthusiasts who are women, some with a rugged look and others more prone to squealing over the cuteness of a set of pink cowboy boots. Getting back to the men, however, let us take a look at some of the ways that the childhood heroes of the silver screen can remain a part of one's wardrobe without looking like a Halloween costume.
Obviously, one of the very best ways to incorporate western apparel into a daily wardrobe is to do so in a subtle way, especially for those who aren't exactly living the life that usually accompanies western wear. Having some western style accessories, for example, is a great way to spice things up and represent the masculine figure that a cowboy encompasses. A western belt buckle for example, can be added to an outfit for an instant shift in theme. Cowboy boots really are the most traditional way to spice up an outfit, of course and can be worn with a multitude of other styles. If you're a very brave fashion-forward individual, you might even pair a nice pair of cowboy boots with a business suit. You would be surprised how well that works.
As you go forward with the mission to incorporate more western wear into your daily life, you will eventually want to include items like the pearl-snap shirts and even nicer shirts with embroidery. After all, decorative stitching and leather inlays are the two main aesthetic additions to western wear, so they will show your true appreciation for the style.
