Payment Gateway as Secure Way to Process Online Payments

Wednesday, November 27, 2013

A payment gateway is an e-commerce application that is provided by a Payment Service Provider to protect online payment transactions. It is the equivalent of a physical Point of Sale (POS) terminal that can be found in most retail outlets.
When a consumer uses their credit card to make an online purchase from a merchant’s website, the payment gateway will acquire and secure the relevant card details. It will then encrypt certain sensitive information, such as the credit card number, before passing the details between the merchant’s website and their payment processor.
Although it is not tangible like a POS terminal, a payment gateway performs exactly the same purpose. Once the Payment Service Provider has processed and verified, the credit card details, confirmation will be sent via the payment gateway back to the merchant’s website so that the transaction can be completed (if the card details have not been verified, then another form of payment will be asked for).
In addition to providing online merchants with a payment gateway, most Payment Service Providers can offer a number of additional services to add further value to their products. These may include various online tools that will enable the utilisation of certain fraud screening processes such as AVS and 3D Secure.
A further benefit is the fact that every transaction that is processed through a payment gateway is captured and stored in the merchant's account, thereby automatically keeping track of all online payments.
For subscription based websites in particular, the fact that many payment gateways also have the ability to charge customers on a regular basis, means that the burden of PCI compliance is taken away from the merchant and placed with the Payment Service Provider. By adopting this method, the merchant no longer has to worry about storing credit card information on their website, or having to install the required security measures in order to comply with the regulations.
Although they are in themselves quite specialised applications, payment gateways are far less complicated than many people believe, and although a payment gateway may appear as a relatively small component, it is in fact a powerful and essential tool that plays a significant role in the success of online processing.
